Terms of Service
Effective date: [EFFECTIVE DATE]
These terms are an agreement between you and Semester ("Semester," "we," "us"). They cover the Semester apps, the web app, and semesterapp.com. By creating an account or using Semester, you agree to these terms, our [Privacy Policy](/privacy.html), and our [Community Guidelines](/community-guidelines.html). If you don't agree, don't use Semester.
1. Who can use Semester
To use Semester, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be a current college student with a school email address (.edu) that belongs to you.
- Be able to form a binding contract, and not be barred from using Semester under the law.
- Not have been banned from Semester before.
One person, one account. Don't share your account or sign up with someone else's email.
2. How Semester works
- Locks. You can lock in one person each semester using their name and school email. You can add a second lock (the Back Up Plan) with credits.
- Matches. If two people lock each other in, it's a match. You both find out at the same time and a private chat opens. If it isn't mutual, the other person is never told it was you.
- Anonymous emails. If the person you lock in isn't on Semester, we may send them one anonymous email per semester saying someone is interested. You agree to only lock in people you actually know, and to enter only email addresses you have a real reason to have.
- Resets. Locks reset on Jan 1, May 15, and Aug 25. Matches and chats stay. Changing your lock early costs credits.
We can't promise you'll match with anyone, or that anyone will respond. We may change, add, or remove features.
3. Your conduct
You agree to follow the [Community Guidelines](/community-guidelines.html). In particular, you will not:
- Harass, threaten, stalk, or pressure anyone, including after they've said no, gone quiet, or blocked you.
- Send or post sexually explicit content, hate, or content that's illegal or promotes violence or self-harm.
- Impersonate anyone or create fake or duplicate accounts, including to earn invite credits.
- Use Semester to find out who locked someone in, or try to identify anonymous users.
- Scrape, reverse engineer, overload, or interfere with Semester, or get around its limits or security.
- Use Semester for commercial purposes or to advertise.
4. Your content
You own what you post: your profile, photo, and messages. You give Semester a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, display, and send that content, only as needed to run, improve, and keep Semester safe. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we're allowed to keep under the Privacy Policy.
You're responsible for what you post, and you confirm you have the right to post it.
5. Safety
We review reports and remove accounts that break these terms, but we don't run background checks and can't verify everything people say about themselves. Be careful when you talk to or meet anyone. Meet in public and tell a friend where you're going. Use Report and Block in the app if someone makes you uncomfortable, and contact local emergency services if you're in danger.
6. Credits
- Credits are a limited, revocable license to use features in the app, such as the Back Up Plan and changing your lock. They have no cash value, can't be transferred or sold, and can't be exchanged for money.
- You can earn credits by inviting friends who join. We may change how many credits an invite earns, cap how many you can earn each semester, and remove credits earned through fake accounts or other abuse.
- If we offer credits for purchase, purchases are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play under their terms, and refunds are handled under their policies. Otherwise, purchases are final except where the law requires a refund.
- Credits are forfeited if your account is deleted or banned.
7. Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or ban your account, remove content, or limit features if we reasonably believe you broke these terms or the Community Guidelines, or to protect other users, Semester, or the public. Where it's safe and practical, we'll tell you why. If you think we made a mistake, email support@semesterapp.com.
Sections 4 (for content we may keep), 6, and 8 through 13 continue to apply after your account ends.
8. Semester's property
Semester's name, logo, app, and website (other than content posted by users) belong to us and are protected by law. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app for its intended purpose under these terms.
9. Disclaimers
Semester is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. 10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Semester won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data or profits, arising from your use of Semester. Our total liability for any claim relating to Semester is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $50. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
11. Indemnity
